Melamchi, 24 February, 2015 : Majority of children of the Danuwar community do not go to school in Fatakshila of Sindhupalchowk district due to poverty.

Their parents are also not aware about their children’s education as they have to toil most of the time just for two squares meals a day.

The news is reported at a time when Nepal has declared that it has made a significant progress in the Millennium Development Goal (MDGs) and is on track to achieve five of the eight goals by the 2015 deadline.

Take for instance Asmita Danuwar from the village. She stays at home doing domestic work instead of going to school. She represents the many children of her age who have a similar fate. Only a dozen children from 263 households of Fatakshila go to school.

“Nobody in my family has gone to school so I do have no interest to study,” said Asmita. Her father Sano Khadga Bahadur Danuwar said, “We have no source of good income to afford school expenses including the stationary and tiffin so villagers do not send children to school but use for domestic works.”

“Some children, who admitted at schools, too, go to look after the cattles and collect fodder instead of going to school following their mates, said Sano Khadga Bahadur.

Children prefer going for work instead of schools as their parents are not aware about their future nor the children show any interest for study, said Harka Bahadur Danuwar, a local from Fatakshila.
