Maoists to declare unification today

Kathmandu, May 19, 2016: The scattered and divided Maoist parties and factions are announcing their unification under the UCPN (Maoist) through a joint convention in Kathmandu on Thursday.

According to the UCPN (Maoist) Spokesperson Dinanath Sharma, the joint convention will be held on Thursday morning at a party palace in Kathmandu and the unification declaration will be made by Thursday afternoon.

“The leaders are in a last-hour meeting now to finalize the unification documents and organizational structure of the unified party,” said Sharma late Wednesday.

Majority of the central committee members of the Communist Party of Nepal Revolutionary Maoist (CPNRM) led by Ram Bahadur Thapa on Saturday had formally decided to unite with the UCPN (Maoist). Revolutionary Communist Party of Nepal led by Mani Thapa and leaders from some other Maoist factions also followed suit. However, CPNRM Chairman Mohan Baidya and his supporters are not joining the unification process.

According to UCPN (Maoist) Secretary Barshaman Pun, the unified party will announce a 499-member central committee after the joint convention.

“The party unification coordination committee has been working on to finalize the modality of unification, names of office bearers, size of central committee, politburo and standing committee members among others. However, the central committee will be of large size to accommodate all comrades,” said Pun.

According to him, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been preparing a political document for the unified party to present at the joint convention while Thapa has been preparing party statute to implement after the unification. The joint convention is supposed to declare dates for holding the general convention of the unified party in the near future.

Initially, Matrika Yadav-led CPN (Maoist) was also in negotiation for unification but he backed out at the last moment stating there are unresolved issues.
