MASSIVE LANDSLIDE BLOCKS SUNKOSHI RIVER DAM

Chautara, Aug. 2: A dreadful landslide occurred at Dhuskun VDC, Jure of Sindhupalchowk district has blocked the Sunkoshi River dam since 3.00 AM this morning.

 

Local people residing along the Araniko Highway and Sunkoshi River from Lamosanghu to Dolalghat have fled their settlement for safety in fear of possible outburst of Sunkoshi dam blocked due to landslide.

 

Though the natural calamity is said to have devastated 40 houses of local people, the authentic information to this effect is yet to be established, said Deputy Superintendant of Police (DSP) Bharat Bahadur Bohora.

 

It is yet to be ascertained whether there is any loss of life in the incident. The flooded area is 80-km away from district headquarters Chautara. It is learnt that the flood is still occurring in the area.

 

The police administration has made public announcement asking local people to go to secured area. However, movement on the Araniko Highway has not been halted. The electricity and telephone service has been disrupted in the area after the landslide swept away electric poles.

 

Chief District officer Gopal Prasad Parajuli, DSP Bohora and Nepal Army Lieutenant Colonel Suresh Karki have moved to the landslide-ridden site immediately after the incident, it is learnt.

 

There is no single drop of water flowing in the Sunkoshi River due to blockage and local people are reeling under terrible situation, said Basudev Karki, a local of Lamosanghu.
