Minister for Youth and Sports participates in Youth Forum 2017

New York, January 31, 2017: Minister for Youth and Sports Daljit BK Shreepali has participated in the ministerial roundtable of the 2017 Youth Forum of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) entitled “the role of youth in poverty eradication and promoting prosperity” in New York on Monday.

The Youth Forum this year is being organized this 30-31 January, on the theme “The Role of youth in poverty eradication and promoting prosperity in a changing world”.

On the occasion, Minister Shreepali shared how the Government of Nepal was integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into various youth development programmes. He highlighted some programmes such as ‘youth skill and leadership development training’, ‘youth communication’ and ‘rural youth entrepreneurship’ launched by the Government targeting vulnerable young population, especially young women, to address the problems, such as unemployment, poverty, gender violence, trafficking of girls and domestic violence.

 

The Youth Forum this year discusses about the various issues affecting the youth population all over the world including ending poverty and inequality as well as promoting youth entrepreneurship and employment, and underlined the importance of effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to materialize the ambition of ‘leaving no one behind’.

In addition to the roundtables, there are six different breakout sessions organized under different themes featuring youth and ending poverty; hunger and achieving food safety; healthy lives and promoting wellbeing; gender equality and empowering of women and girls; resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation; and conservation and using oceans and seas sustainably.
