The per capita consumption of milk and dairy products is however still far from the WFP prescribed a minimum of 91 litres in a year.

The consumption in milk and dairy products is said to have increased due to the rising agro grants provided by the government in agriculture and livestock farming.

At the meeting today of the parliamentary Agriculture and Water Resources Committee, Minister for Agriculture Development Hari Prasad Parajuli said milk production has increased in the country due to the artificial insemination carried out in more than 400,000 cows and buffaloes in the past fiscal year.

The target for this fiscal year is around 600,000 livestock and that is expected to further boost milk production in the country, he added.

The government will also be providing agro budget ranging from a minimum of Rs. 30 million to 70 million to all the districts. The VDCs and the municipalities are also required to spend 15 of their budget in the agriculture sector.

Speaking at the meeting chaired by the Committer Chair Gagan Thapa, lawmakers said the government has failed to introduce effective policy and programmes targeting the agro-based country, utilize the available budget and to provide relevant and timely information and knowledge to the farmers.
