US-Nepal International Moot Court Competition Kicks Off

Kathmandu, March 16, 2018: US-Nepal International Moot Court Competition organized by Fulbright Alumni Association of Nepal in collaboration with Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy has begun from March 16, 2018, in Kathmandu.

National Law College, Chakrabarti Habi Education Academy College of Law, Nepal Law Campus, Kathmandu School of Law and Kathmandu University School of Law and one college from the United States are participating in the competition. Each team comprises of four students along with a coach.

In the competition, law students have to argue in hypothetical cases in front of the judges similar to the court like environment. Participants will also take part in simulated court proceedings, like drafting memorials or memoranda and oral argument in the moot court.

In the inaugural session of the competition, Sapana Pradhan Malla, Supreme Court Justice shared that the law professionals should not only point out problems but also look at the cause of problems and their impact. She further added that fear of ‘contempt of court’ should not limit freedom of expression.

US Ambassador to Nepal Alaina B Teplitz opined that shaping judiciary for an accountable governing system is important as Nepal has come into the crossroad with the new constitution, new government, new opportunities and new challenges.

The competition will be held until March 18, 2018.
