Kathmandu, June 9, 2016: Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NEA) is in the process of implementing a plan that will allow users to switch the mobile operator they use without having to change their phone number.

The technology associated with this upgrade, ‘Mobile Network Portability’ (MNP) has been available worldwide for a long time, and preliminary studies to assess its viability in Nepal was conducted about 4 years ago, according to a spokesperson for the NEA, Min Prasad Aryal.

Because of technical obstacles, the service was not made available sooner, but it will in about one and a half months. Out of the 6 mobile operators available in Nepal, Nepal Telecom, Ncell and Smart Cell fulfill criteria to participate in the MNP service.

Although MNP is free in most countries, whether there will be costs associated with it or not in Nepal is yet to be decided.
