Kathmandu, June 12, 2016: Mid-Valley International College (MVIC) successfully conducted a national level culinary competition in Kathmandu.

The first of its kind in Nepal, the ‘MVIC National Culinary Competition 2016’ gave a platform to the participants from different hospitality businesses in the nation to come forward and show their talents.

A well-recognized panel of judges comprising of Dr. Souji Gopalakrishna Pillai and Mr. Hairul Hisam Bin Bujang from HELP University in Malaysia, Mr. Govinda Narshing KC, President of Chef Association of Nepal and Mr. Yubaraj Pokhrel, Executive Chef at Soaltee Crowne Plaza judged the participants on the basis of the taste, presentation, professionalism and innovation in their works.

The prime objective of the competition was to establish a professional platform where culinary professionals across Nepal could display our culturally diverse food, their individual and combined skills, creative talent, and learn, share, partner and network in a purely business like and competitive environment.

Uttam Thapaliya from Hyatt Regency Kathmandu became the ultimate winner in the competition, while Paban Jung Khatiwada from Shangri-La Hotel secured the second position. Talking about his experiences about the programme, Thapaliya shared that it was an amazing experience participating and winning the competition. “It was for the first time I prepared food independently outside my workplace. Here, I got to network with a variety of people and learn many things in a friendly environment,” said he. “It has encouraged me to do the job better on the day to come and contribute to the hospitality sector in Nepal.”

Hairul, one of the judges, shared that such competitions help the chefs working in different hospitality businesses come to a single platform and apply whatever they have learnt in the best possible way.

Sharing his experiences about the competition, Dr. Souji Gopalakrishna Pillai, the other judge, said that it’s good to see such competitions happening in Nepal. “Unlike other competitions, it not only brings talents to the forefront, but also recognizes and rewards them,” he shared. “In Malaysia, we see such competitions organized in an international level that last for many days. I wish to see this competition to grow to that level in Nepal.”

The competition was organized on 12th June, from 8:00 am onwards at MVIC premises, Gyaneshwor, Kathmandu.

The program was designed by Glocal Pvt. Ltd. for Mid-Valley International College.
