Birgunj, Dec 24, 2014: Nepal is in the 49th position, out of 78 countries of the world, in view of food security. Mountainous districts in the mid-western and far-western development regions of the country are at high risk of food shortages.

United Nation’s World Food Programme estimates that population of the world will reach nine billion within 2050 and food production should be increased by 70 per cent to supply the food needed to feed this population.

This information was shared at a training organised by the Ministry of Agriculture with the support of World Food Programme in Birgunj. The four-day training concluded today.

The training was organised with an objective of formulating food security action plan. Trainings related to development of systematic, timely and reliable information system for food security, importance of district-level food security mechanism, food availability needed for food security, access to food, use and stability were provided.

Under-Secretary at the Ministry, Hemraj Regmi, said that the training was focused on the issues of Nepal food security monitoring system, food security response analysis, food security situation assessment, identifying alternatives of response, among others.
