Kathmandu, Dec 26: Nepal has emerged as a champion in the 1st Everest Open International Karate Competition.
In the competition organized by Nepal Sitoriyo Karate Association here on Friday, Nepal bagged 25 gold medals and 23 silver medals. Likewise, India and Bangladesh each won one gold medal in the competition.
The gold medalists from Nepal include Sagar Karki in 35 kg weight category while Pemba Chiring Sherpa in 40 kg, Anish Lama in 45 kg, Sona Lama in 50 kg, Sujan Shrestha in 55 kg and Raju Tripathi in 60 kg.
In women’s category, the gold medals were won by Mandira Thapa in 35 kg weight category, Monika Yonjan in 45 kg, Ayusha Shahi in 50 kg, Mingma Tamang in 65 kg and Srijana Sapkota under the 68 kg category.
Likewise, in the match played under 10 years of age India’s Baishali Pradhan defeated Nepal’s Kushum Poudel to bag gold medal which remained the only gold medal won by India in the overall competition.
In 40 kg weight category, Bangladeshi player Priya Antar defeated Nepal’s Mira Yonjan to win gold medal.
In the competition held for two days, 497 players from Nepal, India and Bangladesh competed for 27 gold medals.
