Kathmandu, July 26, 2017: Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) collected 236,799 units of blood from 72 different districts and donated it among 327,321 patients in the last fiscal year 2016/17. NRCS informed about this amidst a program organized in Kathmandu today to celebrate the 51st anniversary of Blood Transfusion Day in Nepal.
In the program, Chairman of NRCS, Sanjiv Thapa said, “It’s a challenging job to serve people, convincing them about the importance of blood”. He added, “For the continuity easy availability of this service, Nepal Red Cross Society will be cooperating with all blood donor organizations, with institutional commitment.”
Thanking NRCS for continuous service since 51 long years, Director of Public Health Laboratory, Government of Nepal, Dr. Rajkumar Mahato said that number of donors at present stands at 15 percent only. He pointed out the necessity to take an initiation towards increasing this number.
In the program, Chairman of Central Blood Transfusion management committee, Dr. Yuvaraj Sharma said that the government should also take responsibility for the adequate and timely supply of blood, and asked for assistance for the improvement of standard and quality, as well as the continuity of the service.
The program was graced by, central office bearers and members of NRCS, representatives of various bodies of government, representatives from volunteer donor organizations, blood donors, and media personnel among others. Amidst the anniversary celebration, a blood donation program was also organized, informed Dibya Raj Poudel, Head of Communications department at NRCS.

Blood Transfusion Day was also celebrated in Nepalgunj, by organizing an open blood donation program.
In the event, medical superintendent of Bheri Zonal Hospital, Dr. Bir Bahadur Chand said that Red Cross is always standby to provide blood immediately to the pregnant mothers, and accident injuries among others. He also said that because of this, health service has become more effective in the hospital.
Similarly, Chairman of Red Cross Banke Section, Gobardhan Singh said that blood transfusion has come to this stage because of the common contribution of all. As the demand for blood has increased sharply in recent years, he called for volunteer donation to save lives.
