Kathmandu,5 Feb 2015: Minister for Information and Communications Dr Minendra Rijal has said that the Nepal Telecom Company (NTC) should provide quality services while also playing a leading role in the field of telecommunications in the country.

Speaking at a function organized to mark the 11th anniversary of the Company here Thursday, Minister Dr Rijal said the NTC should enhance its internal and qualitative abilities considering the attraction of private and international investment in the communications sector. “Telecommunications service is not satisfactory in pursuance to the competitive market of the same”, he said while adding that NTC service is accessible but not of quality. Services of other service providers are of quality but are expensive.

On the occasion, Minister Dr Rijal also disclosed that preparations were being made for involving a strategic partner for 30 per cent of the 92 per cent of Nepal Government’s share in the NTC. The strategic partnership must bring in quick and high results for the company while the huge investment in infrastructure should be highly valued in course of forging such a partnership, he added.

He also suggested laying off the burden of the around five thousand employees working for the NTC while calling for service expansion in possible areas of new technology.

Also speaking at the programme, Chairman of NTC Board of Directors and Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communications Sunil Bahadur Malla emphasized on the need to translate the existing challenges into opportunities for the Company. NTC must commit itself in serving the general public as per the liberal policy and work harder to make itself more professional, he added.

Managing Director of NTC Buddhi Prasad Acharya expressed the commitment to improve the quality of NTC services through institutional reforms while Chairman of Nepal Telecommunications Authority Digamber Jha stressed on the need of quality service from the Company.

Marking the 11th anniversary, the NTC has announced 11 per cent concession in the tariff of mobile service starting today to February 12 and 11 per cent concession in the monthly tariff of the month of Falgun for its landline telephone users. Discount has also been announced in the internet service and a special discount for the women health workers for the next 12 months.
