January 26, 2017: Nepali short film Dadyaa-The Woodpeckers of Rotha has won the Special Jury Award for Cinematography at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, the largest independent film festival in the USA.
Directed and written jointly by Pooja Gurung and Bibhusan Basnet, Dadyaa tells the story of an elderly couple who are haunted byÂ memories when one of their friends leaves village without notice.
The film then explores theÂ dilemma the couple continuesÂ to live with: to keep living withÂ the memories or to leave theÂ village for good.
The 17-minute long short film was screened at Kimff lastÂ year where it bagged the BestÂ Fiction film award under Panaroma section.
The Short Film Grand Jury Prize, awarded to one film in the program of 68 shorts selected from 8,985 submissions, went to And so we put goldfish in the pool, written and directed by Makoto Nagahisa.
