Kathmandu,3 Dec 2014: Differently able people, gathered here today to observe the 23rd International Day of People with Disability, have demanded to ensure their equal access to the information and technology.
Their demand has come in the backdrop of the International Day of People with Disability that falls on December 3 and being observed throughout the world with the theme- ‘Sustainable Development; the Promise of Technology’.
On the occasion, Minister for Information and Communications, Dr Minendra Rijal, admitted that although the Supreme Court, ruling in the favor of the people with disability, has ordered to build the disability-friendly infrastructures, the State has not been able to put it into practice.
“Nepal as the least developed country is engaged in the struggle to institutionalize the republic itself. Hence the issues of Disability have been inadvertently overlooked,” opined Minister Rijal.
Dr Rijal also expressed his commitment that the new constitution will incorporate the issues of people with disability.
Similarly, echoing with the Minister, Ramesh Pokharel and Ramkushal Panta, the chairpersons of Nepal Association of the Blind and the National Association of the Deaf, respectively, said the State should treat every citizen equal by bringing the prevailing prejudices among the differently able people in the country to an end.
National Federation of the Disabled (NFD) Nepal, on the occasion, held a Morning Rally in Kathmandu that saw the participation of the stakeholders and the differently able people.
