Rantnanagar (Chitwan), 2nd February, 2015Â : A two-day bird festival has kicked off in Chitwan from today.
The first-of-its-kind festival in Chitwan is being organized in a bid to spread awareness on the conservation of the birds and to underscore the important place birds have in the ecosystem, shared Basu Bidari, the Chairperson of Bird Education Society, Sauraha, also an ornithologist.
In the past, the festival used to be organized in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in Saptari. This reserve is known as the bird watchers paradise and it is home to 493 species of birds.
Organized on the occasion of the 44 World Wetlands Day, the Bird Festival, started with Chandra Shekhar Chaudhary, the Chief of Chitwan National Park’s East Sector, by giving birds grains.
Tika Giri, the coordinator of the festival, shared that 626 types of birds are found in Chitwan but many birds in the wetland are on the verge of extinction owing to the environment degradation.
He also urged all to join hands in conserving both the bird and the environment.
In the opening day, the festival also saw an interaction on environment conservation and sanitation. Foreign volunteers, on the occasion shared their experiences on the management of waste in Sauraha.
Local entrepreneurs spoke of the need to utilize the recommendations of the foreign volunteers on waste management while others drew the attention of the concerned authorities to stop burning the plastic waste.
The festival also saw a drawing competition held today among the students while a sanitation programme will be held tomorrow inside the national park, informed Coordinator of the Bird Festival Giri.
