Kathmandu, Nov 24: Different stakeholders have demanded discussion on inclusion in Nepali media in course of the 18th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) scheduled for Nov 26-27.

At an interaction programme jointly organized here Monday by South Asian Dalit Rights Forum and Jagaran Media Centre on ‘Participation in Nepali Media and Inclusion in Content’, speakers stressed the need to hold serious discussion on overall challenges, prospectus and inclusion issues of Nepali media

Indian Dalit rights activist Bina Penikal said that caste-based discrimination is all-pervasive in the South Asian region and media campaigns should be conducted massively to end caste-based discrimination.

Journalist Gopal Khanal stressed that the government and private media should enforce inclusive policy to bring out the issue of Dalit community.

Researcher and Dalit rights activist JB Biswokarma said the issue of Dalit participation is pertinent in Nepali media albeit media coverage is somehow visible.

Jagaran Media Chairperson Rem Biswokarma noted that there should be mandatory policy in media to enable equal participation of women, Dalit, Madhesi, Muslims, indigenous nationalities and oppressed community in Nepali media.

Meanwhile, speakers at an interaction programme organized by Samata Foundation on ‘Access to Justice and Discrimination-free South Asia’ said the agenda of caste-based discrimination and disparity should be discussed in the SAARC.
