Deeper Integration Among South Asian Countries Stressed

Kathmandu, Nov 25,2014: Various speakers have stressed that the heads of the governments/states of SAARC member countries should lay emphasis on enhancing mutual integration towards attaining the goal of the establishment of the regional association.

At an interaction programme organized here on Tuesday by India Today on the occasion of the 18th SAARC Summit, distinguished speakers noted the importance of consolidating mutual unity among the member countries tot that end.

The speakers recommended that the SAARC member states should develop a common view to fight against terrorism as it has menaced all the nations of the region in one way or another.

Stressing that the bilateral relations between India and Pakistan should be improved, they said the unified armed force could likely to be developed with firm commitment at regional level to combat terrorism.

The speakers also underlined the need to end the prevalence of different forms of discriminations including caste-based discrimination and harassment towards building prosperous South Asia enabled with social justice.

Afghanistan’s President Asaraf Ghani, the key note speaker at the interaction, stressed that the deeper integration among the people of the region should be maintained to bolster power to fight against the common challenge of terrorism in the region.

The mutual unity is a must for shared prosperity, he said, adding that the unobstructed and accessible delivery of services and products is key to reduce poverty level in the region.

Nepal’s Minister for Information and Communications Dr Minendra Rijal said it is the prime time to take ahead the association maintaining mutual goodwill rather than involving in blame game.

Mutual unity and understanding is imperative to tackle the challenges of poverty and unemployment prevailing in the region, he said, adding that attention should be paid on building multi-party democracy and open economy system for prosperous SAARC.

Speaking at the interaction held in three phases, Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nalin Koholi, former Information and Publicity Minister of India, Manis Tiwari and Pakistan’s former Foreign Affairs Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said India and Pakistan should remove the bitter relations of the past and maintain friendly ties so that it would help expedite the SAARC in an effective manner.
