EXPERTS STRESS ON LACK OF NEPALI EDITION BOOKS ON JOURNALISM

Kathmandu,30 Jan 2015: The second day of the 2nd National Book Fair saw an intense  discussion over curriculum on journalism and media studies and publication of related books.

The publications of books on journalism have surged in recent times with an increase in the students taking up journalism in their field of academic study.

On the occasion, speakers underscored inadequacy of books on journalism and materials in Nepali edition, lack of public library and absence of publicity of available materials.

Media expert Laldeusa Rai said it was wrong to believe that the books available on journalism subject were old and outdated. Rai added that the universities were ushering in new changes to suit the needs of the public and time. “There is need for development and publication of books on ideological study apart from the regular curriculum books on journalism,” Rai said.

Managing Director of Brikuti Publications Likhit Pandey said the publication was mounting efforts to avail the readers and teachers of expensive foreign books in Nepali edition in affordable price. The publication has also started publishing books on media research produced by Martin Chautari from ninth edition.

Researcher on communications, Dr Pratyush Onta said it would be more practical if the teachers concerned are given prior information before preparing the curriculum books on journalism.

Radio expert Raghu Mainali said the current study on journalism had failed to produce right expert and a right journalist and called for giving due focus towards changing the curriculum books. Lecturer on journalism Ghamaraj Luintel underlined the need for standard curriculum and books to enhance the quality of journalism.

The Nepal National Distributors and Publishers Association in collaboration with Nepal Academy organized the book fair with an aim to develop reading culture among the people. The fair will be held until February 8.
