Parsa, Feb 16: A group of peasants involved in sugarcane farming in Parsa district Sunday protested against the apathy of the government towards their three-point demand by setting their sugarcane on fire at Ghantaghar in Birgunj.

The peasants led by the Sugarcane Peasants Struggle Committee, did so as the concerned management remained indifferent, shared Saharum Raut Gaddi, Chairperson of the Sugarcane Peasants Struggle Committee, Parsa.

The three demands the Committee had pressed for were the sales and management of sugarcane, bringing the closed Birgunj Sugarcane mill into operation and introducing the programmes benefiting the sugarcane farmers.

At the protest programme, Lalbabu Raut Gaddi, Central Vice-Chairman of the Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum (Nepal) and Sashikapur Miya, the Central Member of Forum Lokatantrik, argued that the government should immediately do the needful to manage the sugarcane produced by the peasants.
