Kathmandu,12 Feb 2015:Minister for Finance Dr Ram Sharan Mahat on Thursday made an inspection of the Tarao tunnel in Singuoka, Japan and inquired of the technology being used on it.

Finance Minister Mahat, who is on a week-long visit to Japan, inspected the tunnel to gain insights into the technology and the geographical condition in view of Nepal government’s preparations for construction of similar tunnel at Naagdhunga.

The Minister is on a visit so as to gain insights into the high-end technology put in place for construction of such tunnels in Japan. Japan has at least 10,000 tunnels similar to that of Tarao, which is 4.5 km in length.

The Minister left for Japan on Saturday accepting an invitation from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Minister Mahat also held talks with Japanese State Minister for Finance Isshu Sugawara, said Gajendra Bista, FM’s Press Advisor.

During the talks Minister Mahat commended the generous support of the Japanese government towards Nepal continued since a long time back. Expressing his gratitude for the Japanese support on the Tanahun Hydro Power Project, Minister Mahat said the project would run without any hindrances and that it would be completed on time. He added that Nepal was giving high priority to constitution writing and economic development and underlined the need for more Japanese support for Nepal’s infrastructure development.

Minister Mahat also apprised of Nepal’s target of graduation from the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) by 2022.
