Harry Bhandari from Nepal Secures Seat in the Lower House of USA

Kathmandu, November 8, 2018: Harry Bhandari becomes the first Nepali American to be directly elected to the Lower House (House of Delegates) of the United States. He was elected from District 8 of Maryland State in the US midterm election that was held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

The 41-year Bhandari was successful to secure second position among 141 persons of 47 Maryland state districts elected to the House of Delegates. Harry is a teacher by profession and had visited 15,000 houses to canvass votes in the election campaign this year. He had filed his candidacy for the House of Delegates from the Democratic Party. He had also won in the interparty election held in June this year, securing 5,941 votes.

However, this is Bhandari’ second attempt at winning a seat in the House after being defeated in the elections of 2014 He was born in Parbat district of Nepal and it’s been over one decade that he has been active in the Democratic Party. Bhandari expressed the vote of thanks to his voters after he was elected to the House of Delegates.
