Lawmakers call for addressing educational problems

Kathmandu,14 Dec 2014: Lawmakers have blamed the Ministry of Education for its sheer negligence in the latest problems facing the education sector.

Speaking at the meeting of the Education Sub-committee under the Legislature-Parliament today, lawmakers said that the Ministry is indifferent towards these problems.

They raised questions over the leaking of MBBS entrance question papers, demands of temporary teachers, passivity in amending of education, university umbrella act and the activities of Janak Shiksha Samagri Limited among others.

Lawmakers Jeevan Pariwar and Shree Maya Thakali pointed out the need of correcting these issues soon.

Coordinator at the Sub-committee, Dr Ganesh Man Gurung said the Education Minister should cooperate with the committee to address the problems facing the education sector.

Similarly, the Chairperson of the Women, Children, Elderly citizen and Social Welfare Committee Ranju Jha said that the Ministry was indifferent towards the demands of  25,000 temporary teachers and the problem seen in Janak Education Materials Limited where 200 employees were expelled.

She said that if the Ministry goes ahead isolating the committee, it would not be acceptable to them.

Similarly, Secretary at the Ministry Bishwa Prakash Pandit informed the committee members that the 50 per cent temporary teachers have been made permanent while the remaining 50 per cent are yet to be permanent. The government should make a clear policy on the number of teachers to be needed for the nation.

In the meeting, Temporary Teachers’ Struggle Committee chair Ram Chandra Adhikari opined for not to announce free vacancy on the post of temporary teachers unless the education act was amended.
