Janakpurdham, Jan 26: The cases of leprosy have gone up in Dhanusha district.

According to the District Public Health Office, Dhanusha, some 178 cases of leprosy have been identified in the first four months of the current fiscal year whereas only 159 cases of leprosy were detected during the last fiscal year (2068/069) BS.

Similarly, the cases of leprosy were reported in 165 people in the fiscal year 2066/067 BS.

Of the total 178 leprosy cases, 110 new cases were found in the first four months of the current fiscal year, shared Ramgulam Karna, the Chief at Leprosy Control Programme at the District Public Health Office, Dhanusha.

Among the new cases, 48 are women, 37 men and 25 below 14 years, added Chief Karna.

Although the country was declared leprosy-free on 2010, new cases of leprosy continue to surface in the district, especially at 12 VDCs in the district like Yadukoha, Parabaha, Lohana, Itaharwa and Barmajhiya among others, considered to be at high-risk of leprosy.
