Bhaktapur, Jan 21: The traditional Nawadurga Dance also known as the ‘Fish Killing Festival’ kicked off in Bhaktapur, a district famous for various festivals, and surrounding areas.
The Festival which originated during the Malla period commences from November till June.
The festival is marked at different 21 places within Bhaktapur Municipality alone, said Shivabhakta Banmala, a member of the festival organizing committee.
Besides this, people in various parts of the Kathmandu Valley including Badegaun, Changunarayan, and in Banepa, Dhulikhel, Panauti, Shreekhandapur, Sanga, Khampu, Dhungkharka and other places in Kavrepalanchowk district.
As part of the festival, mask dances are performed by people representing the Nava Durgas (the nine goddesses in the Hindu pantheon) and the 19 different deities in the presence of four dozen deities. This festival has tantric origins.
