Parliament drafting new education policy

Kathmandu,17 Dec 2014: The Education Sub-committee under the Women, Children, Senior Citizen and Social Welfare Committee of the Legislature-Parliament is carrying out a field study and monitoring of the education institutions to draft a new education policy.

The Coordinator of the Sub-committee and the lawmaker Dr Ganeshman Gurung said that a team of sub-committee will start its filed study and monitoring from next week.

The monitoring team will begin with its observation from Janak Education Materials Centre and other educational institutions which are learnt to have been involved in misappropriation of the fund.

According to Dr Gurung, the Sub-committee, failing to submit its empirical report of education within its 3 months of deadline, has requested with the main committee for one additional month of time in the light of the monitoring and carrying out a field study of the academic institutions.

Admitting the shortcomings of the Ministry of Education for not being able to implement the directives and policies formulated by the University Grants Commission, lawmaker Dr Gurung said the committee has instructed the government to form a high-level education commission to formulate the educational Act amendment bill to move ahead for drafting the new education policy.

Meanwhile, in an interaction programme on education jointly organized by Education Journalist Group and Alliance for Social Dialogue, leader of UCPN (Maoist) Agni Prasad Sapkota said overall change in education is essential like re-structure in State Provision.

“Education of Nepal calls for a massive revolution. Education should be prioritized to further the economic development and institutionalize political changes,’ stated leader Sapkota.

Similarly, lawmaker from Nepali Congress Tejulal Chaudhary opined that government should generate employment in the country so that Nepalese, even the educated ones, need not go to the Gulf Nations by seeking greener pastures.
