Parties nearing consensus on federal structure

Kathmandu, Jan 4: The major three political parties are nearing a consensus on the disputed issues of the forthcoming constitution.

At the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar today, the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and UCPN (Maoist) have come close to agreeing on the most contentious issue of federal structure.

The parties have almost agreed on the name and number of the federal units but not yet on the demarcation. The demarcation issue will be resolved at a meeting of the four major parties including the Madhesi front to be held later today, according to Minister for Law and Justice Narahari Acharya.

Talking to reporters following the meeting, Minister Acharya said the three major parties held positive talks in order to narrow down the differences.

The parties have agreed on the name and number of the federal units and will resolve other issues through a series of dialogue to be held until today evening, he added.

The major political parties have been engaged in single party and multi-party dialogue and discussion to come up with an agreement before the deadline of Monday given by the CA Chair.
