Kathmandu,17 Nov 2014: Minister for Information and Communications, Dr Minendra Rijal, has said all sides should be sensitive to the issues concerning children.

Inaugurating the four-day WADADA News for Kids Summit begun here from today, Minister Rijal said that media should highlight the basic issues related to health and sanitation, education and water which cause direct impacts on children.

The Communications Minister said, “We should address kid’s issues in positive way on the mainstream media.”

He said, “Improvements in children’s livelihood will help the countries like Nepal to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).”

The Summit is jointly organised by Free Press Unlimited, the Netherlands, and Nayapusta/Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists (NEFEJ).

Similarly, Ruth Kronenburg, Director of Operations at Free Press Unlimited said that 14 countries Kids news television program is producing by partner organizations to provide opportunity to capture the issues and voices of children.

She reiterated that we should always put children in centre.

Laxman Humagain, General Manager of Nepal Television said that Naya Pusta programme related to children is a good example to draw attention of the kids and parents to change discrimination against girls and women during menstruation in the cities in our societies through collaborative efforts. Likewise, NEFEJ President Sahaj Man Shrestha said that WADADA the worldwide platform for kids news has been a supportive in sharing child issues globally.

The 34 participants including experts from United Kingdom and Germany and organizations producing kid’s related TV program from 14 countries are participating in the Summit.

WADADA News for Kids is a project of Free Press Unlimited, which, together with local partners, sets up youth news bulletins in developing countries. So children at a young age, learn that there is more than one truth and that the world is bigger than the village they grow up in.

WADADA News for Kids annually organizes a summit for its network. The purpose of this summit is to exchange lessons learned, to strengthen the network and its future strategies and to announce the winner of the WADADA News for Kids award.
