Kathmandu,27 Feb 2015: Thamel, a tourist hub in the capital, is to be equipped with solar street lamps so as to keep this busy area illuminated round-the-clock.

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) with the support from the Asian Development Bank has so far installed 18 solar lamps in front of the Tridevimarga-based Provident Fund building and behind Ascol campus. The installation of solar lamp has also beautified Thamel, according to NEA chair Ramsharan Thapaliya.

The NEA is planning to decorate other parts of Thamel with solar lamps soon. Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and other various 16 banks and five finance institutions have agreed to cooperate with the NEA for this noble purpose. Over  200 lamps of 40 watt will be installed in a distance of 35 meters at different locations of Thamel. In case of congested street, house roofs will be chosen for the installation, NEA said.

The installation work is expected to cost Rs 2.02 million and TAAN and NTB have agreed to contribute Rs 1.5 million each.
