US, BRITISH AMBASSADORS CALL ON UCPN (MAOIST) CHAIRMAN

Kathmandu, Nov 19: The ambassadors of the United States of America and the United Kingdom met separately with Chairman of the Unified CPN (Maoist) Pushpa Kamal Dahal today. In the meetings that took place at Dahal’s residence at Lazimpat, talks were held on the latest situation of the constitution writing process. In the meeting, US ambassador Peter W Bodde inquired about the progress in the constitution writing process and the next steps.

In reply, the UCPN (Maoist) chairman said problems have been encountered as the ruling parties have attempted to issue a constitution on the strength of a majority overlooking the past agreements and understanding.

Although the 12-point agreement, the Interim Constitution, the Comprehensive Peace Accord and the agreements reached with various sides are the major basis for constitution writing, the latest activities of the Nepali Congress and the CPN (UML) were directed towards scuttling the constitution-writing, Dahal said during the meeting.

Chairman Dahal said that his party was effortful towards constitution writing so that all would own it and it was also ready to demonstrate the required flexibility for the same, Dahal’s aide Shiva Khakurel quoted him as saying during the meeting.

Dahal was of the belief that an acceptable constitution would be issued within the stipulated date of January 22, 2015.

Likewise, British Ambassador Andrew James Sparkes in his meeting with chairman Dahal held talks on the constitution writing process, the UCPN (Maoist)’s role, among other issues.
