Jumla,14 March 2015: The whereabouts of a woman swept away in an avalanche that struck in the high-altitude hinterlands of the district remains unknown.

Laxmi Bhandari of Depalgaun-9 of Jumla district disappeared in an avalanche that hit on March 22. A group of persons including Bhandari had gone to the highlands to graze mountain goats being kept there. Among the four persons, who accompanied her, two have already returned home after minor treatment while the other two were found with critical injuries.

The District Police Office, National Investigation, Sidhibaxa Battalion, Karnali Brigade 24 and the local residents equipped with counter-emergency tools have been launching a seamless search for Bhandari, but her location remains unclear, said Bishnu Prasad Neupane, Chief District Officer.

The search area is still shrouded under six feet of snow sheet while the rescue efforts have been hampered by inconsistent weather pattern trending to adverse conditions, according to DSP Balram Rai of District Police Office, Jumla.
