Kathmandu, Jan 24: UCPN (Maoist)-led opposition parties on Saturday have asked the Constituent Assembly Chairman Subas Nembang to take steps to renew efforts to forge consensus among the disgruntled sides.

The opposition parties have also called for postponement of the CA proceedings for few days more comes at a time when the CA Chairman is expected to table the proposal for preparation of the questionnaire on putting the contentious issues to votes at the CA meeting at 1 pm on Sunday.

The UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and senior leaders from Forum (Democratic), Terai-Madhesi Democratic Party met with CA Chairman Nembang at latter’s office making such appeal.

Pressing ahead with the constitution making process on basis of consensus will usher in positive effects so the parties have underlined the need to postpone the slated programme for tabling the questionnaire and make attempts for consensus, Dahal said.
“We appealed to the CA Chair to take steps for agreement,” Dahal said adding, “But he informed us that the process could not be halted as it had already begun.”

Dahal added that the CA Chair was of the opinion of running the consensus bid simultaneously with the process.

The CA meeting which is being obstructed from January 19 prompted CA Chairman Nembang to announce that the CA impasse would end on Sunday through any feasible resolution.

“There are no alternative to moving constitution writing process ahead,” Nembang had said while the opposition lawmakers continued to chant slogans at the rostrum.

Federal Socialist Party Chairman Ashok Rai said the CA Chair rejected the appeal made by UCPN (Maoist) including other opposition parties.

“I will make efforts for consensus despite the formation of questionnaire committee; the major parties must also make their bid for the same, but it is impossible in the immediate context to halt the process,” Chairman Rai said quoted CA Chairman Nembang as saying.

The opposition parties have already made their call for fixing a new calendar on constitution writing in view of the failure to meet the deadline on January 22.
Nepali Congress, CPN (UML) among other ruling parties have made their point on not sitting for negotiation until the opposition continues to obstruct CA proceedings.

UCPN (Maoist) senior leader and Constitutional Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee (CPDCC) Chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai and UCPN (Maoist) Vice-Chairman Narayankaji Shrestha were also present at the meeting with the CA Chair at the latter’s office.
