PM'S Statement Positive: Opposition Leader

Kathmandu,8 Feb 2015: Secretary of the Unified CPN (Maoist) Barshaman Pun has said the statement by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala appealing to the opposition alliance to talks was positive.

Speaking at a programme organised by Reporters Club Nepal here today, the UCPN (Maoist) leader said that they would abandon the ‘street process’ and join the dialogue process if the ruling sides halted the process they have unilaterally started in the Constituent Assembly.

“This statement of the PM has not clearly shown the possibility of talks; it is incomplete. But we will call a meeting of the 30-party alliance and make our official views on it public,” he said.

He stated that they would sit for talks if a statement is issued by the ruling parties committing to implement the 12-point understanding and the past peace accords. However, we will not joining talks if it is only done for stopping the protest movement, he added.

Chairman of the Sanghiya Sadbhawana Party Anil Jha said the Prime Minister’s statement was kind of run-of-the-mill and they could not sit for talks immediately.

“The Prime Minister’s statement does not address our demands,” he said, adding that they would not sit for talks until the Questionnaire Committee was scrapped citing it was formed on the majoritarian basis.
