President to open intl Buddhist meet in Lumbini

Kathmandu, Nov 11: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav is scheduled to inaugurate the International Buddhist Conference to be held in Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, from November 15 to 18.

The international conference titled ‘Promotion, Protection and Preservation of Buddhist Culture and Heritage’, is organised jointly by the Theravada Buddhist Academy and the Shitagu International Buddhist Academy, Myanmar. A 40-member Conference Organising Main Committee has been formed under the joint leadership of the Chairman of the Thervada Buddhist Academy and the Upasanghanayaka of Nepal, Dr Gyanapurnik Mahasthaveer and Chairman of the International Buddhist University Association Chairman, Bhikkhu  Dr Asin Yannasir (Shitagu Sayado).

Different six sub-committees have also been formed under the Main Committee. Ninety-four working papers related to the three main Buddhist sects as Thervada, Mahayana and Bajrayana are to be presented and discussed in the international conference.

More than 400 Buddhist monks and scholars from around 30 countries are taking part in the conference. The UNESCO and the Asian Development Bank based in Kathmandu, the Lumbini Development Trust under the Government of Nepal, the Lumbini Buddhist University are also participating in the conference.
