Kathmandu, May 20, 2018: Standing atop the summit of the Mount Everest on Saturday, Purnima Shrestha has become the first Nepali photojournalist to conquer the peak.

According to Dipesh Shrestha, Spokesperson of Photojournalist Club, she reached the peak at 8:10 am yesterday, 19th May, 2018.

Along with the successful attempt at the summit, she also held a solo exhibition titled “Smiling Women of Nepal” atop the highest point on the planet. The exhibit included single photos of Nepali women climbers from the base camp to the summit.

Shrestha’s ascent is an effort to raise awareness about cervical cancer and to promote Nepal’s culture and tourism in cooperation with Nepal Tourism Board #PHotoNepal campaign. The Photo Journalist Club Nepal had provided technical assistance for the exhibition.

Born in Arughat of Gorkha 26 years ago, Shrestha is also the first Nepali photojournalist to scale Mt Manaslu.

She started as a professional photographer five years ago and is associated with Karobar daily.
