SAARC Summit Highly Successful: MOFA

Kathmandu, 28 Nov 2014: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has said that the 18th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit was successful to utilize as an opportunity for multilateral diplomacy through the Summit.

The 18th SAARC Summit organized on 26-27 November with the theme of ‘Deeper Integration for Peace and Prosperity’ ended on Thursday by adopting a 36-point Kathmandu Declaration.

Organizing a news conference here Friday, the MoFA said that the Summit provided an opportunity for the leaders of this region to know and understand each other closely.

The MoFA also said that the slogan fixed by the Nepal government for the SAARC Summit was praised by all the member countries, claiming that the selection of the slogan was proved a sagacious step as the statements of the heads of state/government were centered on the theme.

On the occasion, Foreign Affairs Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey said that the country justified its capacity by successfully completing the SAARC Summit even during the time of ongoing political transition.

He said, “The SAARC Summit has taught that success could be achieved by working through the collective utilization of conscience, knowledge and capacity of all. The Summit was highly successful. ”

Minister Pandey said that the all member countries should implement the contents and declaration adopted by the SAARC Summit by making programmes at national levels.

Pandey added that agreement on roads and railways could not be held due to oddities of acts and laws of some member countries. He said, however, the SAARC Council of Ministers would forward the issues in three months by meeting all processes.

On the occasion, Acting Secretary at the MoFA Shanker Das Bairagi said that the VVIPs praised the preparations and management done by Nepal in the 18th  SAARC Summit.
