School running classes under open sky

Khotang, December 30, 2016: More than a year after the devastating earthquakes, Jaleshwori Primary School of Jaleshowari VDC in Khotang still lies in ruins.

In the days after the tremors subsided, a makeshift shelter had been erected.

Head teacher Khina Maya BC said the school with 29 students did not get the budget for construction of any infrastructure. “We have filed an application along with photos of the destroyed building at the DEO, Khotang, but we have received no support so far,” she informed. BC further added it challenging to run classes in the makeshift shelter, especially during the rainy season.

School Management Committee Chairman Dhan Kumar Rai said students were made to sit on the ground as the school lacked furniture. “We are operating classes under the open sky,” he said. Rai said the future of the children’s education was uncertain at this point.
