Kathmandu, Aug 24: Different political leaders have called for allocating reserved constituencies for the dalit community so as to ensure their political representation.

Speaking at an interaction organized by different sister organizations of dalits from different political parties here in the capital today, UCPN (Maoist) leader Shakti Bahadur Basnet pointed out the need of reserving constituencies for dalit communities to ensure their rights as they were suppressed since long.

Similarly, Rastriya Janmorcha Chair Chitra Bahadur KC opined for exerting pressure by the dalit leaders in their parties and in street and parliament for the same purpose.

Nepali Congress leader Man Bahadur Bishwakarma objected on the preamble of the new constitution as the rights of dalit were cut off and the dalit rights should be mentioned even by amending bill of constitution.

CPN (UML) leaders Jitu Gautam and dalit leader Padam Sundas warned for strong protest if their demands were neglected.

Dalit communities have been protesting in different stages for ensuring their representation in proportion to their population, which they claim to be 13 per cent.
As many as 40 lawmakers represent the dalit communities in the current constituent assembly (CA).
