Nepalgunj, Aug. 18: The day-to-day life of the people in Banke district has been badly affected with the district remaining under indefinite shutdown since a week now.

The shutdown enforced by the Tharuhat, Madhes Struggle Committee especially in protest against the delineation of federal provinces has badly affected the health and education sectors.

The committee organized the shutdown as of Monday and the United Democratic Madhesi Front has joined the shutdown bandwagon from today. The Front has called for a shutdown in all the districts of the Tarai region (the southern plains region) from today. This has added to the woes of the ordinary wage earners and the citizens.

“Protest movement can be undertaken even without organizing banda (general shutdown); the politics that is practiced by bothering the people is not in the interest of the people and the country,” remarked Kalpana Pathak of Nepalgunj-10.

Transport services have come to a halt, affecting the daily life of the people. With this, it has been difficult to transport patients from outlying areas to the hospital. Regular studies of students have also been hampered due to the transport shutdown.

It is said shortage of daily consumer goods has been seen in the market here. The banda is incurring a daily over Rs 50 million loss to the local economy, according to President of the Nepalgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Krishna Prasad Shrestha.
