Samarth Jha is 15 year old energetic social activist who is proficient in mental math and public speaking. He had successfully conducted many campaigns and workshops with a genuine intention to help people of his community.
He started his journey as a mental mathematician when he was in preschool. His mother enrolled him to abacus classes in UCMAS, an education company which teaches mental math to young students. After 3 years of rigorous practice, he became so proficient in mental math that he used mental math for all his calculations and rarely used abacus for his calculations. He also participated in a National level competition held by UCMAS where he won the first prize among 4000 students.
Samrath is also a refined public speaker. He had his breakthrough as a public speaker when he participated in a Model United Nations event in grade 9. “Despite some obstacles, I participated in the MUN which was a life changing experience for me. This experience taught me valuable analytical and speaking skills,” said Samarth. After embracing his fear and nervousness, he realized he was capable of using the skills he learned in MUN to do something better. He made a group of five friends and initiated motivational programs for schools. This program was immensely successful and gathered positive responses.
His passion for social work started when he was in grade 9. “I was skillful in mental math. So, I realized I could use this skill for a better cause by teaching what i learned to other students,” he said. He collaborated with Innovative Learning Cell(ILC) to conduct a week long workshop for students. Along with mental math, he also taught vedic math to about 12 students and was successful in teaching them whatever he learned in UCMAS. He took minimal charge and taught the lessons of mental math. Later, he also provided free classes to orphanages of Purwanchal Bal Sewa Ashram.
Samarth also collaborated with social groups called connecting club international and Nepal cricket foundation to organize cricket workshop called ‘Cricket for Equality’ for girls of his hometown. Coaches from England came to teach these young girls cricket which empowered them immensely.
He faced many difficulties in his journey of social activism. He was often underestimated for his age which made it difficult for him to gain trust of people. He also had financial difficulties to organise free mental math workshop for orphanages but his passion to help people found a way despite financial difficulties.
Glocal teen hero and his future plans
Samarth attended glocal teen hero conference a few years ago where he got the opportunity to interact with influential people. He also got to know about Glocal teen hero and thought of applying immediately. “GTH is an amazing platform which can help young minds flourish in their field of interest,” said Samarth.
He plans to expand his mental math workshops to more schools and wants to help young people learn the skills of mathematics. He wants his workshops to reach government school where many aren’t aware of workshops as such. “There is a huge disparity between government schools and private schools in terms of academics. If government school students are provided with the opportunity, then they can have a bright future,” he said earnestly.
Samarth Jha was selected among the 20 brightest young entrepreneurs, innovators and game changers below the age of 20 in Nepal, for the year 2019. This annual list is the ultimate honor roll of young game changers reshaping Nepal for the better. The platform seeks to encourage the youth to share their initiation, creativity, and enthusiasm which will then motivate them and more of the other youths in the nation to develop an entrepreneurial thinking.
