Kathmandu, Feb 9: The people-level assistance programme run by the Nepal Trade Union Congress (NUTC) with the economic and technical support of the International Labour Organisation and Japan Multi-bilateral Programme under the ILO has been effective.
The programme has been helping uplift the financial and social living standard of labourers working in informal sectors. The programme is being implemented in Bhaktapur, Parsa and Morang districts.
At an annual review of the programmes organised here today, Secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Bhola Prasad Siwakoti, said that preparation was underway to table the Labour Act-2048 BS with amendments before the parliament for the social security of labourers. He added that the National Employment Policy-2071 BS has already been formulated.
Senior Vice-President of the NUTC, Ramjee Kunwar, said that they have proposed to run the programme in all the districts in days ahead as the programme has become very effective to uplift the income-level of labourers working in the informal sector.
On the occasion, Japanese Ambassador to Nepal, Masashi Ogawa, said the programme has become very helpful to uplift the income level of such labourers as their contribution to the Gross Domestic Production is high in Nepal as compared to labourers working in formal sector.
Stating that the initiatives taken by the political parties for consensus to promulgate the new constitution as per the people’s wish is laudable, the Japanese Ambassador expressed the belief that there would be remarkable improvement in Nepal’s socio and economic sectors after the promulgation of the new constitution.
He said,” Social, economic and political stability of Nepal has improved after the formation of a government under the leadership of Sushil Koirala following the second Constituent Assembly election.”
Similarly, Vice-President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Shekhar Golchha, said problem has been seen in industry and investment environment for lack of amendment to the Labour Act.
Jose Assalino, Director ILO, Kathmandu, said that contribution of labourers working in the informal sector should be recognized rightfully for their social justice.
