Kathmandu, April 6, 2017: The government has decided to award municipalities making special contribution to waste management.
According to Solid Waste Management Technical Support Centre under the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development, top three clean cities will be honoured with a cash prize of Rs 1,000,000, Rs 600,000 and 400,000 respectively on merit basis in the current fiscal 2016-17.
For this, the SWMTSC has invited proposals from metropolitan cities, sub-metropolitan cities and municipalities which have already been declared Open Defecation Free zone. Any city, which is yet to be declared ODF zone, shall not be eligible to submit proposal. The final date of submission of the proposal is mid-April.
The cities will be scored on scale of 0 to 100. Out of 100, waste management carries weightage marks of 50 per cent followed by water supply and sewerage management (15 per cent), greenery development and urban aesthetic promotion, pollution control and management (6 per cent) and institutional development (10 per cent).
According to the ministry, this scheme is not just an event, but it is a commitment to local levels to work towards solid waste management and keep their city clean in the long run. A household generates an average of 200 grams of waste daily, which means around 5,320 metric tonnes of trash is produced across the country every day.
The Kathmandu Valley alone produces an average of 1,000 tonnes of garbage daily. Waste management is still a challenge in the Valley as there is no mechanism for separating organic and non-organic waste at the source. Although the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has initiated separation of waste from households by distributing green and red bins, it has not been effective.
