Western regional women’s festival kicks off in Kushma

More than 5,000 women from the region rally across to celebrate Women’s Day

Parbat, March 9, 2017: The ninth edition of the Western Regional Women’s Festival has kicked off in Kushma in Parbat on Tuesday. The fest is organised by Radio Didibahini to mark its anniversary and the International Women’s Day.

The first day of the fest drew a crowd of more than 5,000 women mostly representing various clubs and groups from the region, who rallied across Kushma bazaar.

One of the highlights of the rally was the women carrying agricultural produces as a symbolic representation of how women if given enough liberty and respect can be independent.

Speaking to the Post, Chairperson of Didibahini Radio, Kalpana Chapagain, said: “Radio Didbahini is probably the first radio station in the country managed entirely by women. It was very difficult when we started, but now that we’ve endured some seven years, it stands as a testament to our faith and determination.”

Radio Didibahini exclusively employs women in all wings of its operation, as an attempt to, as Chapagain puts, “bring to the fore voices of those many voiceless women whose lives are limited even today to the constrictions of household chores.”

The fest that will run till March 13 will see a variety of folk-cultural programmes and exhibition of agricultural goods produced by women in the region.
