Kathmandu,27 March 2015: In a bid to create awareness against cancer, ‘Gyanu Dahal Cancer Memorial Trust’ has been founded.
UCPN (Maoist) leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai announced the formation of the Trust at a programme here Friday. The Trust was established in memory of UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s eldest daughter Gyanu Dahal who died of cancer last year.
During the programme, Gyanu’s widower Arjun KC said the Trust was founded to create awareness against cancer and carry out the screenings of those vulnerable to the disease and help find effective measures to control it.
Expressing happiness over the establishment of the Trust, Dr Bhattarai said that his party was for empowering women who are bearing burnt of gender-based and regional suppression. He said that Trust’s role would be crucial for raising awareness as women were more vulnerable to breast cancer and the period for treatment could take longer.
Currently, the government has been offering Rs 50,000 in cash to the cancer patients.
During the programme, UCPN (Maoist) leaders and senior journalist Yubraj Ghimire, among others were present.
