Call for Applications: United Nations Traineeship Programme – Cohort VI

United Nations in Nepal has called for applications from potential Nepali candidates belonging from Socially Excluded Groups for a traineeship programme with UN Agencies. UN Agencies in Nepal have initiated a joint traineeship programme for the University graduates belonging from Socially Excluded Groups to provide opportunities to develop their professional competencies and enhance their employability prospects.

The programme will be for 11 months’ period with a full time on the job training assignments with access to mentoring and practical experiences in an international UN working environment. Opportunities for prospective trainees are available in the areas of Public Health, Child Protection, Social Policy, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Information/Database Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Administration and Finance, Culture, Architecture, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion, Monitoring and Evaluation, Media and Mass Communication, Data Entry and Analysis, Agro-Forestry (Agriculture/Forestry/Natural Sciences) and Education.

The minimum selection criteria for the applicants:

  1. University graduate (minimum Bachelor’s degree);
  2. Belonging to a Socially Excluded Groups;
  3. Passion to work in the development sectors;
  4. Appreciation of UN Core Values (Professionalism, Integrity & Respect for Diversity);
  5. Strong commitment to learn;
  6. Willingness to work with diverse groups;
  7. Basic communication skills (oral and written) in English and Nepali languages;
  8. Commitment to complete the assignment during the traineeship period.

Meanwhile, a graduation programme was recently organized for 25 cohorts in UN Traineeship Programme that started in June, 2016 concluded on May 10, 2017. Having undergone intense on-the-job training, these graduates are now ready to work in their areas of interest in various organizations.

During the 11 months long training programme, the trainees were deployed at various UN agencies like UN Women, World Health Organization (WHO), Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development programme (UNDP)/Residents Coordinators Office & United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Working at units like Agriculture & Climate Change, Women Peace, Security & Humanitarian Actions, Communication, etc., the trainees developed their competencies in the areas like knowledge of the UN working system, ability to work with diverse teams, ability to work under pressure, communication, time management and much more.

“The Traineeship Programme provided me with an opportunity to get involved in various activities like market research, preparing solicitation of documents, scoring bids/proposal, etc.”, says Amir Limbu, UN Trainee at Procurement Unit – UNDP. Along with this, I was also able to develop skills like negotiation & communication, relationship management, team work and a lot more, he said.

“I am very thankful to the United Nations for providing me with such an opportunity. Being physically disabled has always presented me with challenges in the job market,” says Rita Singh, one of the trainees at UNTP Cohort V. “The on-the-job training really has uplifted my confidence level as I have learned a lot during the traineeship period,” she further said.

Similarly, the mentors to these trainees have also demonstrated a high level of satisfaction with their trainees. Ability to work with a diverse workforce, teams, commitment, can-do-attitude and eagerness to learn are some of the skills sought after by the mentors in their trainees.

“Working in the Communications team at UNICEF has broadened my set of skills & competencies,” said Anita Lama. “After the completion of the programme, I feel that I am well equipped with communication skills like media monitoring, administration, MS Office, planning & organizing, etc.,” she added.
