Highly passionate about science and invention, Bikalpa Dhungana, 19, is consistent inventor. He has invented ‘Anyway Military Vehicle’ followed by helicopter technology, bomb disposal robot, earthquake alarm device, manual loading and lifting Robot part 1 and 2, grass cutter machine, paddy thrashing Robot, football player Robot, Police Robot, Sobi Anti-alcohol Vehicle Protecting System (SAAVPS), Smart mask, traffic light system and so on in Nepal.
Originally from Manpang, Tanahun, he completed his plus 2 from Pokhara Multimodal College. Besides, he is engaged with the organizations like United idea Nepal, Karma Foundation, Research Developer in Everest Technomario Pvt. Ltd., and Professional Service Director in Rotaract Club of Pokhara Lakeside.
Starting of his journey
When he was in 5th grade, he built a toy car of 1.5 V which could move on both land and water. This was his very first step in his long journey towards invention.
Similarly, more than half a decade ago, he formed the club named “Student Science Club of Tanahun” which was all focused on visiting different schools to change the rote-learning perception of the students on science subject and inspire students towards innovation.
Making a difference
His inventions are primarily based on solving the various day to day problems that are prevailing in typical Nepali society. Aiming to solve the excessive shortage of petroleum products during economic blockade, he decided to make a solar powered scooter, for which he was awarded with ‘Yuwa Pratibha Puraskar’ by Nepal Government in 2015.
Likewise, seeing excessive road accidents among bike riders, he researched for two years that showed alcoholism as the main reason behind it which led him to build Sobi Anti-alcohol Vehicle Protecting System (SAAVPS) which could turn off the starting bikes by its two kinds of detector installed in the helmet.
The technology that he has used in the temple of ‘Byas Cave’ sounds unimaginable which has significantly increased the percentage of visitors. This technology involves the automatic turning on of hymn by the sensation of lightened incense stick.
Seeing the pathetic condition of traffic police struggling with dust, he invented Smart Mask, which can be used to whistle without opening the mask. There are more than hundreds of projects he has done among which majority invented to solve the existing problem in our society by the use of science and technology.
Apart from invention he is also involved in training and inspiring teens. He has piloted science and technology training in around 200 schools in Nepal. He wants to encourage young innovators to pursue science showing the possibilities of the subject. He also inspires the young students to invent and challenge their knowledge.
A step towards teen hero
“One of the fellow rotaractor of our club asked me about my personal information without telling me anything. But later I came to know that he with all other fellows have nominated me in Glocal Teen Hero 2018. This was the first time when I heard about this event. Later I filled the form, following the email sent from Glocal Teen Hero”, he stated on asking about his teen hero journey. “More importantly, news of being selected in Glocal’s 20 under 20 brought immense happiness and excitement which cannot be expressed in words”, he added. He admitted that this type of recognition strengthen him to do even better in his works.
Guided by his deep passion towards invention, the success he has achieved is appreciable. The state should identify the teens like him and help them to flourish their capabilities, before it’s too late.
