Pokhara Walks Against Breast Cancer

Kaski, November 5, 2018: Over thousand people walked for creating public awareness on breast cancer at ‘The Pink Ribbon Walk- 2018’ held Saturday. It was a two-kilometre Walk organised by the Nepal Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Walk was held second time in Pokhara and this time the event was comprised of the walk centred in Lakeside which was followed by Open Zumba session. There was a medical team providing counselling about the disease to the public and the participants carried placards and banners supporting breast cancer awareness messages.

Suzita Hirachan, Foundation’s President said, “The objective of the programme is to build an atmosphere so that people could talk about more and more about breast cancer; become aware of it and support the patients with their every step. Besides, we want women to talk openly about their health issues and take preventive measures.”

Among the Nepali women, Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer after cervical cancer.  In various parts of the Kaski district, regular health camps about breast cancer, counselling and distribution of drugs are provided by the organizers.

According to the American Cancer Society, Women above 45 years of age should undergo screening for breast cancer once a year. There is an availability of treatment in the early stage of breast cancer.  In the case of timely diagnosis of the disease, Mammography has survival rate is more than 90 per cent.

Dr Utsab Man Shrestha, Japanese cancer specialists and breast cancer surgeon from Kathmandu also had joined the Walk.
