Short Movie Screening and Panel Discussion Against Gender Based Violence

Kathmandu, March 15, 2015: On 14th March, 2015, U.S. Embassy Youth Council (USYC) Nepal and YUWA in collaboration with the Onion Films organized the closing event of the Short Film Contest on the theme launched on 30th NOV 2013 marking 16 Days Activism against Gender Based Violence and ended on 4th March 2015.

DSC_0653The event featured screening of five short listed film, under the theme “Challenging Conflict and Ending Gender Based Violence”. The program was followed by a panel discussion on the topic “Gender Equality in Transitional Nepal”, and Susan Parkers Burns, Public Affairs Officer at U.S. Embassy was invited as chief guest of the event. The objective of the event was to promote gender equality and gender equity and develop visual media as a means towards that goal.

 

The films were judged by four esteemed Juries:  Mr. Dinesh D.C., Ms. Priayanka Karki, Mr. Suraj Bhusal and Mr. Manoj Pandit. Among the top five films, KALAM- KUSUM (Bibhu Luitel and Team) grabbed the Grand Jury Award whereas, Ashtiwa (Nabin Bhatta and team) won the Silver Award. Jibika (Rajeela Shrestha and team) won the Audience choice award with its interesting story and fine acting.DSC_0430

The second half of the event was a panel discussion which had Bharat M. Shrestha (LGBTI Human right, HIV and LAW officer at UNDP) Priyanka Karki ( Film Actress) , Asha Singh (Seven Summiteer and Everest Human Trek) and Kanchan P. Kharel (President, YUWA) as the panelist and was moderated by Ms. Samin Rijal.

The program ended with the price distribution ceremony, the Grand Jury Awardee received Rs. 15000, Silver awardee received Rs. 1000 and the audience choice awardee received Rs. 5000.
