Kathmandu, October 10, 2018: World Mental Health Day is celebrated this year at Yala Maya Kendra. It is celebrated on October 10 worldwide and the theme of this year is “Young People and Mental Health in Changing World”.

As the theme emphasized upon youths, a maximum number of participants was of youth. Due to the narrow thinking about the mental health issues, discourse and discussion on this issues are very important as youth hesitate to open up and express even after going through a lot of mental problems. For the awareness to the general public especially youths, the event was jointly organized by Mental Health For All, Independent Citizen’s Coalition, We for Health Nepal, Lumbini College of Buddhism & Himalayan Foundation and CREASION (Centre for Research and Sustainable Development Nepal).

Youth are the most vulnerable population to suffer the consequences of mental health issues. Most mental health problems begin during young age (12 to 24 years of age), although when ignored and youth suffer and feel isolated. Mental health issues are strongly related to our growth, career, and development issues like education, job, family as well as physical, emotional and sexual health.

The cost of not speaking mental health is high than normal understanding. Even suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 29 years old today. Harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs among adolescents is a major issue in many countries and can lead to risky behaviours such as unsafe sex or road accidents and more.

Therefore, the aim of the event was to come together, start the conversation on mental health and figure out the different and happy ways to be mentally healthy.
