Kathmandu, April 26, 2018: Nearly two third of classrooms damaged during the 2015 april earthquake are awaiting reconstruction three years from the disaster. It is learned that only one-third of the total damaged classrooms have been reconstructed so far.
Even though the post-disaster recovery report of the National Reconstruction had plans to finish the reconstruction of classrooms in three years’ time, only one third of the total damaged classrooms have been successfully reinstated and functional.
The progress in school rebuilding has been slow due to several factors, including lengthy land acquisition process, lack of skilled manpower and construction materials and adequate budget as shared by Imnarayan Shrestha, the director of NRA Central Level Project Implementation Unit (Education).
A total of 13,249 classrooms from 3,613 schools out of 39,000 classrooms from 7,923 schools have been rebuilt so far out of which 75 percent of them were reconstructed by the school management committees, 15 percent by non-government organizations and 10 percent by the business community.
A total of 1,700 schools undergoing reconstruction are set to be completed by this year and a budget totaling 12 billion rupees is allocated for the same, according to sources.
The District Project Implementation Unit (Educaition) have been set up to aid in the reconstruction of Schools in 20 out of 31 earthquake-affected districts. The NRA signs the contract and releases the amount for the reconstruction after the local levels recommend the names and endorses the sketch of schools that are to be reconstructed.
