Kathmandu, Feb 10, 2015: Debate Network Nepal (DNN) is now formally registered as a profit not distributing company (social enterprise). Upon acquiring legal status, DNN now is gearing up their operations as nation’s leading debate body.

DNN was informally established in March 2013 when its three co-founders Pradeep Ghimire, Rishab Krishna Shrestha and Sajal Pradhan realised the sincere need of establishment of genuine debating culture in the nation. Since then, it has been promoting parliamentary debating specially in Nepali academic sector.

DNN organizes regular and special debate sessions in various formats like Karl Popper, World Schools and British Parliamentary. It also organizes various big and small debate tournaments. Last August, AITM Kathmandu’s Debate Mahakumbha tournament attracted over a hundred debate enthusiasts to debate in various sustainability issues of nation’s capital.

DNN also conducts Nepal’s finest residential debate workshop ‘Tarkashala’ meaning the school of argumentation. It has already produced 60 Tarkashala graduates combining 4 different batches of the school.

The enterprise also offers tailor made debate programs for concerned institutions. Last December, upon realizing that debate skills are vital for policy makers and political parties, DNN powered an intense debate workshop ‘Sansadalaya’ for Bibeksheel Nepali, a political party.

Last week, DNN celebrated its formal establishment inducing its executive team. Chair Pradeep Ghimire and Vice Chair Sajal Pradhan introduced the 15 other executive members in the presence of some of its well wishers and Tarkashala fellows.

Addressing the celebration, Anita Thapa from Civic Schools Nepal, Pramod Pradhan from AITM and DNN national advisory board member Abdus Miya wished for the success of DNN. Chair Ghimire also conveyed the best wishes message from international advisors Logandran Balavijendran and Ratib Ali in the event. The duo are world famous debate trainers.

DNN has several events coming up. Next week, it is starting month long MahaSangram debate league where around 40 debate teams are participating. Right after the end of the league, which  DNN claims is going to be the biggest debate festival in Nepal, they are organizing 5th batch of Tarkashala. Also, programs like ‘Debate on Wheels’ and Nepal-Bangladesh exchange program are in line.

“Nepali debate movement was hardly even crawling when DNN got its shape first. We managed to give it such a pace that now it is growing on its own. We are basically facilitating this pace now,” chair Ghimire shared with Glocal.

Along with Ghimire and Pradhan, three other debate promoters Manish Kadel, Prabin Basyal and Biplab Subedi are in the core team. Co-founder Shrestha is now the head coach for DNN. The enterprise has also set a partner resource persons board with a pioneer debater Kshitij Raj Lohani being its chief.
